As part of the sixth Joint German Exchange programme, Year 9 language students from All Saints RC School, in partnership with The Joseph Rowntree School, visited Hebbelschule, Kiel in June. Hebbelschule is a small grammar school in Kiel with national recognition as a ‘European School’. The school places a very strong emphasis on the importance of languages and enjoys links with 8 other schools across Europe and North America.
The students spend time in school with their exchange partners and experience teaching in a different environment to their own. To enrich the pupils’ experiences, a student lives with their partner’s family, embracing their culture and lifestyle. During the day they enjoy excursions around Kiel and the surrounding area with visits to places such as the cities of Hamburg and Lübeck.
German Exchange Co-ordinator Linda Mills said, “At All Saints, we strongly believe in providing the right training for our pupils. With the German Exchange programme, the students are given the opportunity to use their classroom language for real, acquire new language knowledge and experience life in another country. This boosts their confidence and strengthens their understanding of German. Many international friendships have been cultivated over the years, not only between the students, but their families as well.”
