All Saints RC School in York recently entered a team into The Under 15s York & District Schools’ 5-a-side Football tournament for girls.
The event was held at Burnholme Community College. Amy Smith, Persia Craven, Georgia Roberts, Georgia Gourlay (all Year 9) and Libby Rankeillor (Year 10) represented All Saints with real aplomb. In a tournament of 18 teams All Saints qualified for the semi-finals with two victories and two draws from their group stage matches. This alone was an excellent achievement considering the strength of their opponents.
A 2-0 semi-final victory against Selby School meant that the girls would face tournament favourites Holy Family in the final. “We thought we would be thrashed in the final as Holy Family were an exceptional team”, said Persia afterwards. All Saints were in the ascendancy at the start of the match, taking an early and well deserved lead courtesy of a wonder goal from Libby Rankeillor.
The rest of the game was a rather tense affair and the All Saints girls finally succumbed to mounting pressure from their opponents to concede an equalising goal in the last few minutes of the match. And so to penalties where, sadly for the All Saints team, the Holy Family team emerged victorious. The girls were very modest about their achievements and philosophical in their reflections, “Getting to the final was exhilarating,” enthused Libby and she continued to add, “We were disappointed to lose but immensely proud to have done so well, especially as we were leading for so long.”
What makes the achievements of the girls even more impressive as that four of the team will still be eligible to compete in the tournament next year with genuine ambition to improve on this years’ wonderful performance.
