All Saints have won the regional North East round of a national French debating competition.
Ellie Griffin and Sophie Hope were our team and they debated brilliantly with conviction in four debates throughout the afternoon.
They were competing against 7 other schools from north East.
They debated 2 motions in the first round, then a third in the semi-finals; these 3 had been prepared in advance, but they didn’t know until the start of the debate whether they would be arguing for or against the motion. They then had to debate an unseen motion for the final, having only 15 minutes to prepare for it.
The debate topics were:
Round 1: ‘Drugs should be allowed in professional sport’; ‘These days all children should have mobile phones’
Semi-final: ‘Literature is a waste of time, we can learn everything from television’
Final: ‘Immigrants are essential to our country’.
The competition was excellent, and the standard of debate in French from all the schools throughout the afternoon was exceptional.
Sophie and Ellie now go through to the national final in London.
It was a wonderful experience and we are very proud of our students.
