Study in
the Department of Health and Social Care:
You may study
the AQA GCSE (single) Award; AQA GCE Applied Health and Social Care
(double) Award; the Level 2 Higher Diploma in Society, Health and
Development, or the Progression Diploma in Society, Health and
Development All courses are taught by qualified and experienced
staff and supported by good IT facilities in the designated teaching
rooms, (you will find the home base for Health and Social Care in
Stable 4; the Child Development and Diploma room is situated
upstairs in the Nattrass building). Teaching strategies range from
supported independent learning to practical class work and teacher
or student presentations. Teaching is normally carried out in small
groups, which allows for individual support and helps to create
confidence.
For all courses, work experience is
encouraged and supported. Work experience is a mandatory part of
the Diplomas, and time will be given to work placements during the
year; Health and Social Care students are encouraged to gain
experience in care settings outside lesson time. This experience is
invaluable for helping you to set your learning in context, and to
give you the kind of CV which will be helpful when in pursuing a
career in Health and Social Care or a related service.
Applied learning
is an essential component of both courses, and to facilitate this we
regularly invite visiting speakers to talk to students. This year
our visitors have included a Midwife; Educational Psychologist; YOT
worker; several Social Workers and PCSOs; a teacher of the blind
and a carer for the disabled. We also have good links with the
local charity, ‘SNAPPY’, which works with disabled children and
young people; Woodlands Respite Care Centre and Fulford Nursing
Home. We are a very active department and are constantly looking to
make new links within the community, which will be of benefit to you
as students and hopefully to the clients who use the services.
We also like to
make the most of opportunities to visit hospitals and care
establishments and health related careers fairs. This year we
visited health fairs at Bradford Royal Infirmary and York
University.
From September
2009, the Department will be offering the following qualifications:
