On 2nd December, over 1000 students, parents, staff, guests and friends of All Saints RC School in York gathered in the majestic surroundings of the York Minster to celebrate the school’s annual Advent Service. The school is able to stage the service in such a spectacular setting thanks to the gracious generosity of the Dean and Chapter of York.
The service is held to mark the beginning of the season of Advent and the theme of this year’s service was ‘Prayer’. This theme was chosen to continue the commitment the school community has made over the last year and to reflect and act upon the Year of Faith.
The service consisted of a seamless programme of readings, acting, music and prayer, which were delivered and performed entirely by students ranging from Year 7 to Year 13.
Highlights of the evening included the atmospheric and moving solo and group performances by members of the Orchestra and Chamber Choir as well as the Junior Choir’s rendition of the ‘Magnificat’ during which they were joined by the Congregatio Jesu of York. The evening also included a selection of Christmas Carols which allowed the large audience to participate in the evening, ensuring the vast interior of the Minster resounded to the uplifting words of Hark the Herald Angels Sing in a fitting conclusion to the service.
Special thanks must go to all the students who participated so impressively, Mr Mann and Mrs Oxley for their musical arrangements, Mrs McCormick and Miss Wright for their work with the student readers and Father John Bane who wrote the Liturgy for the evening.
